At this moment in time, I would say yes. This gorgeous weather we have been so blessed with getting has turned me to alcohol. I don’t normally drink. the occasional glass (okay, bottle) of wine in the house, or Vodka if I’m going out on a weekend, which let’s face it with a 2 and 3 year old at home is very rare. But when the sun is shining, I’m finding myself drinking pretty much every day, even if it’s just one. It just happens! I finish work and I open the freezer and pray there’s a Frozen Cocktail in. I mean who doesn’t love a frozen cocktail when the sun is shining. I don’t even feel like its alcohol. But it is, and also full of sugar and crap we shouldn’t really be putting into our bodies. Then I’m loving Froze (again a frozen cocktail, think there’s definitely a pattern forming here). Frozen Rose wine, blended with Grenadine, Vodka and Strawberries.
It’s not just me. People I come into contact with daily all admit to drinking way more when the sun is shining, and you only need to look at pubs with beer gardens, absolutely jam packed. So I think the hard work we do throughout the winter to become “summer ready” is just completely un-done when summer actually arrives.
I have never been on a ‘diet’ and I never wish too. I believe life is far too short to be counting calories every bite I take. My weight has gone up, and it’s come down. When it’s crept up and I am aware I need to lose a bit of weight, I will actively ‘try’ (try being the word, at the minute my will power seems to have disappeared and I find myself looking through my cupboards for some sort of treat) to cut certain foods out, and increase my activity level.
However I did stop and think about the extra calories that we are all consuming when we drink alcohol. I think these calories are forgotten about, because we are drinking them, not eating them. Like these ones don’t count. But they do. I mean you can easily put on 5lb + on a two week holiday. How hard can it be to lose that extra weight when we get home?
Here comes the depressing bit, ( I feel like such a party pooper as I write this) here is the calories that we consume when we drink alcohol.
- 1 Pint of lager = 182kcals
- 1 pint of cider = 216 kcals
- 175ml glass of wine = 159 kcals
- 125ml champagne = 89kcals
- 25ml spirit = 61 kcal
Think of what you might consume on a night out? You can easily drink half of your daily calories (I know there’s some of you that can easily consume more!) in one sitting. And although drinking spirits seems to be the most desirable calorie wise, we tend to add sugary drinks to these which will easily bump up the calorie amount. So maybe we should all drink Champagne?
Now I’m not telling to never drink, because that’s no fun. But I just want you to be aware of the calories in alcohol, and if you are trying to lose weight, or look more lean, this could be an area that you need to address? So are winter bodies made during the summer? I think the answer is YES!
